Perform a web search and you'll find a lot of companies that claim that they do prototyping or product development but give those same companies a call and you'll soon discover how hard it is to get any traction with your idea.  And even when you do, you'll find that they're not too eager to work from your napkin sketch.  

 

Instead, they typically expect you to have an engineering print ready to send them for quoting.  Engineering print?  That's why you're calling them!  The reality is, most contract vendors are in the business to service production accounts.  Despite their claims, prototyping and developing new concepts is a service that they'd rather not offer.

Your other alternatives are starting a brick-and-mortar company and hiring an engineer, or trying to find a consultant to work with.  But these options have their shortcomings as the majority of the fabrication is still farmed out to external vendors.  This approach is inherently inefficient (i.e. time consuming) and it can be very challenging to effectively coordinate and integrate the efforts of several vendors that work independent of each other.
